“No matter how difficult or desperate your life may be …

There is greatness in you!

Now it’s up to you to believe it … and it will be so!”

Take a minute and notice the faces of the people shown at the top of this page. Do you recognize any of them? You may not believe this, but each one of those people is just like you.

You may not be famous. or wealthy beyond your imagination, or extremely successful, or on the cover of every magazine at the check-out in the grocery store, but here’s one thing for sure: Not a single one of those people started out that way.

Most of these people were not born into rich families who could make life easier for them. Some dropped out of college. Some didn’t even finish high school. Many didn’t have a nickle to their name at one point or another. But there’s something else you may not know about these people.

Would it surprise you to know that each one of these famous people has experienced complete and utter failure at one time or another in their lives. And not just little failures, but the kind that’s desperate, humiliating, and spirit-crushing. Some have faced failure over and over again. A few have even faced very public failure — the kind that the whole world hears about on the news and in magazines. And you know what?

No one who is breathing at this moment is immune to failure. No one.

Failure is an Equal Opportunity Experience that’s part of living. It doesn’t matter who you are … You are going to face failures in your life. It’s at those times when you’re faced with doing one of two things:

  • Give up and settle for whatever life has in store for you, or
  • Never give up. You face into the wind and keep trying until you’ve achieved whatever great thing it is you’re trying to accomplish .. . no matter what!

Did you know that a very ordinary man who grew up in a very ordinary home came up with the idea for an invention that would one day change the way the world listen to music?

Do you have any idea how bad it got for an inventor before his world-changing invention became a reality? To give you an idea how bad it got at one point he was actually fired from is own company! Which should tell you how good a businessman he was.

After being fired this dreamer became so dejected that he considered doing something else with his life. At one point he thought about going into politics or becoming — of all things — and astronaut. But eventually he realized that he still wanted to do what he loved the most: Designing and building products that would someday make people’s lives easier, more enjoyable, and make their work more productive.

That dream that changed the way people listened to music? The iPod. The inventor? Steve Jobs. Oh, and the company that fired him earlier eventually begged him to come back? Apple Computer, Inc. of San Jose, California.

Napoleon Hill - Think and Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill, one of the earliest producers of modern personal success literature and the author of the “bible” of self-help, Think and Grow Rich, once made the following proposition:

Hill’s proposition was that if you stopped one hundred 25-year-old people on the street — all of whom have started equal in life and all indicated they wanted to be successful — how many would actually become successful by the time they reached 65?

Statistically speaking, this is what Hill concluded:

  • One would be rich. I’m talking about crazy rich. Not “trust-fund baby” rich, but wildly rich from their own hard work.
  • Four would be financially independent. These aren’t “crazy rich” people, but those that invested themselves well in their careers and their investments.
  • Five will still be working. In short, these people may not be able to afford to retire. Maybe they never really earned enough money during their long career to save anything for their retirement. Or maybe they’ve the company for which they’ve worked for the last 30 years was forced by circumstances to change its employee retirement plan.
  • Fifty-four will be effectively broke. These people actually owe way more than what they have in the bank or in their investments (if any). Or, maybe they just made poor career decisions that forced them into a downward, spiraling financial black hole.

So, why is it that only 5% of those people who intended to be successful in their careers actually reached the mark?

That 5% were people who measured success as the progressive realization of a worthy goal. That is the only way that you can truly succeed financially in life. It’s the person who says to him or herself “I am going to become this!” and then proceeds towards that goal.

Why? What was different about the other 95%? I’ll tell you what happened: They never knew where they were going. They never planted in their minds the picture of themselves accomplishing a worthy ideal. They had no direction and simply let circumstances dictate where they would wind up 40 or 50 years later. They never devoted any time to thinking about where they were going and how they were going to get there.

Why Most People Aren’t Successful in Life

Napoleon Hill’s conclusions led him to ask this question:

What’s wrong with most people today? Here’s his answer:

Most people simply don’t think. This is why the vast majority of people today fail to become the success that they wanted when they were just starting out in their careers. They wind up doing something in life that never really excites them and was never really what they wanted to do in their careers. Many find themselves in a perpetual bind financially which prevents them from doing the things they really want to do in life. Life becomes a bore with the only thing to look forward to is retirement.

  • Are you working towards a worthy, predetermined goal?
  • Is that goal cemented in your mind so that you are always conscious of it?
  • Do you think about that goal every single day as well as how you intend to reach it?
  • Have you put your plan into action and do you concentrate on that action constantly?
  • Do you allow external circumstances to get in the way of your predetermined goal?

A person is what he or she thinks about all day long.

That is a law. It is one that has been scientifically proven to be true. Even the Holy Bible says that this law is true.

“If you can believe, all things are possible.”. If you think in negative terms you will get negative results. If you think in positive terms you will get positive results. You cannot escape from this law anymore than you escape from the laws of gravity. And if you’re foolish enough to think that this law is not real then you’re probably where you are in life because of your disbelief. But make no mistake, this law is very real.

We become what we THINK about.

Mark 9:23 says “all things are possible to him that believeth”

Remember the story of the Sermon on the Mount in Luke 11 when Jesus said,

“I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.…”

Matthew 7:7
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Luke 11:10
“For everyone who asks receives ; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

How You Can Change Your Thoughts to Achieve Your Worthy Goal

So, how do you reprogram your thinking so that you can live a more successful and more enjoyable life? How do you alter your thinking in order to move progressively towards the realization of the life you truly want to live? How can you learn from the 5% of the people who live successful lives — those who excel at a job they really enjoy — a job that they can’t wait to get to every morning. Or be able to give more money or time to a church or some other worthy cause. Or to be a truly successful mother, housewife, or father. Or send the kids to a finer school. Or live in a new house.

There is nothing magic about how you or anyone else can become a part of that successful 5% and have everything you touch seem to turn to gold.

Everyone wants you to be like them.

If you’re not financially independent — that is, in a position to do what you want to do instead of what someone else wants you to do — then maybe you should take a look at the things you do every day.

Are you doing what you really WANT to do?

Why do you get up in the morning? Because everyone else does, that’s why. However, the real truth is that 19 out of 20 people really have no idea why they do that. Everyone goes to work in the morning and that’s why you do, too. But, are you doing what you really want to do?

Many people like to think of themselves as being an “individual” — someone who is unique from anyone else. Someone who doesn’t necessarily follow the herd, so to speak. But that’s usually not true at all.

Most people like to conform and that’s why they aren’t doing what they want to do in life. That’s why they’re not financially independent — let alone rich. They do what everyone else is doing because they don’t want to disappoint the people who know them. They want to fit in with everyone else so that they’re not alone.

Fitting in with everyone else means that you are changing your outlook on life — including your goals and dreams — to make those people more comfortable when they’re around you. Sad when you think about it because your substituting courage for it’s opposite. Conformity.

You see, most of the people you want to conform to don’t have any real goals and therefore don’t see themselves as being financially independent one day. To be fair, some do have a definite goal — much like a ship with a captain and a destination. But again, most don’t have a definite goal and are like a ship with no captain, no crew, and no guidance. They just start the engines and wherever the ship ends up, well, that’s where it will be.

If there is one thing that determines whether a person will become successful in life it is whether they are working towards the progressive realization of a worthy goal. These people are the only ones who will succeed in life while doing what they really want to do everyday.

You become what you THINK about.

Never give up your dream to conform to someone else!

Whether or not you believe that changing your thoughts is real and relevant to your life won’t affect anyone but you. Why? Because there will always be a few people who are tired of the boring treadmill they find themselves on. Their worthy ideal in life had become a distant memory until they realized they had allowed others to mute that dream.

Enough with the conforming! Those people who never give up are done with the conforming to the type of life that other people wanted or expected of him or her. Once they realized that by simply changing their thinking their lives would never be the same again.

When was the last time you endured a job interview in hopes of landing a new job? You had your resume ready (hopefully!). You were dressed professionally. Your hair was just right. Your brain was busy rolling through your list of well-polished answers to most of the questions you were expecting. A little bead of sweat was making its way down your forehead, but that’s expected. You felt like you were ready for anything that came at you from your prospective boss.

Right off the bat the man across the desk asked a question that, well, you really hadn’t expected.

“Give me an idea that I can present to my boss that could help my company streamline its customer invoicing system.”

Hmmm … He didn’t even ask about your last job, why you left, or what kind of salary you were expecting. Instead, the prospective boss-to-be wanted an original idea! And a good one at that since he was going to present it to his boss. He wasn’t conforming to the usual blah-blah-blah that goes on in a typical job interview and this upsets and unnerves many prospective employees.

Not surprisingly, this job interview scenario has now become the norm rather than the exception because companies today want good ideas more than anything else. They want ideas more than where you went to school, what your grade-point average was, or why you were looking for a new position with the company. They want somebody who can THINK, CREATE, PLAN, and ACT. But mostly THINK.

Marcus Aurelius, the great Roman emperor once said, “A man’s life is what his thoughts make of it.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson was quoted to have said, “A man is what he thinks about all day long.”

Famed psychologist William James once said,

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. We need only in cold blood ACT as if the thing in question were real and it will become infallibly real by growing in such a connection with our life that it will become real. It will become to entwined with emotion that it will characterize belief”

George Bernard Shaw said,
“Our doubts are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who succeed in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want. If they can’t find them, they make them.” Shaw was encouraging people to have courage to overcome obstacles and look fervently for ideal circumstances that will bring success to an endeavor.

William Shakespeare:
“Our doubts are traitors and make us lose what good we often might win by failing to attempt.” The “traitors” that Shakespeare was referring to are often those people around us who insist that we follow the “mainstream”; Be more like them; “Go along to get along”. Conform.

Norman Vincent Peale once said,
“If you think in negative terms you will get negative results. If you think in positive terms you will get positive results. This is one of the greatest laws in the universe.”

We become what we THINK about.

Why do we become what we think about? Well, you can compare your mind with a farmer’s land. Suppose a farmer has two bags of seed. One one half of his field he sows corn seed. The other half, Nightshade — a poisonous plant that is lethal to the human nervous symptom. The result illustrates what was taught in Galatians 6:8 “…as ye sow, so shall ye reap …”. One half of the farmer’s land resulted in failure. The other, success.

What we plant MUST return to us. Likewise, our human mind will return what we plant in it. Unfortunately, too many people — those who never experience real success and happiness in life — take their human minds for granted. Instead of planting something good and useful they choose to plant seeds of doubt, defeat, and insecurity.

What is it that you want? Plant that see in your mind and it will become a reality. In fact, there is no way that it cannot because this is a law. But just as the farmer must be careful what he plants this very law gives us success or failure. It is a two-edged sword that can lead a person to a life of success, wealth, and happiness. Or, it can lead a person to disaster.

Everyone of us is the sum total of his or her own thoughts. Each one of us is where we to be — whether we’ll admit it or not. Each of us must live off the fruit of our thoughts in the future. Our thoughts will mold our life and determine our future. YOU are in the driver’s seat!

Life should be an exciting adventure. It should never be a bore. We should make our time on earth an exciting adventure because the greatest architect who ever lived didn’t build a stair leading to nowhere.

As ye believe, so shall it be done unto you.

What you are reading at this moment is something that will likely change your life in ways that you may never have thought possible — but only if you let it. It’s up to you to act on it because success — however you define it — will not just fall in your lap. You have to pay the price for success to happen.

It’s never too late to live the life you want.

The moment you see a goal you will immediately become a successful person. You must then give of yourself — do more than you have to do. And don’t concern yourself with HOW you’ll reach your goal. The “How” will take care of itself as long as you focus your attention like a laser beam on your goal. Remember the Sermon on the Mount?

Ask and it will be given you,
Seek and ye shall find,
Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For everyone that asketh, receiveth,
and he that seeketh, findeth,
And to him that knocketh, it shall be opened unto him.

  • Act as though it were IMPOSSIBLE to fail.
  • Hold your goal in front of you constantly. Constantly REMIND yourself of what you must do to achieve your goal.
  • DO NOT be so concerned about money. Money does NOT bring success. SUCCESS brings money.
  • Do you want more? Start giving more! You will get back what you put out. “As ye sow, so shall ye reap.
  • Do NOT run yourself down. Change the image that you have of yourself and write out a description of what that image is.
  • Act the part of the successful person you were meant to become because you are already successful by virtue of taking the necessary steps to alter your thoughts about yourself.

Embedded in the challenge to never give up is the assumption that it is never too late to embark on your journey of fulfilling your great dream. If you use excuses like “I’m 59 years old … I’m too old … I have too many obligations to my family … People will think I’m crazy … I’ve never finished anything of true significance in my life … It’s important that I conform to what everybody else does and expects of me” … then you’re life will end having never realized what great dreams or endeavors might have been.
